LONGEVITY EXPERTS ARE RAVING ABOUT RUCKING
Exercise is great for brain health to begin with, but rucking has unique benefits. Adding weight to your walk makes it both aerobic and strength training, which combined are helpful for reducing what’s known as visceral fat. It also strengthens the core and spine.
A “big problem” contributing to Alzheimer’s, Gupta says, is visceral fat. “It’s the fat inside the body that you wouldn’t be able to pinch,” sometimes known as deep belly fat, though it also develops around organs, he explains. A landmark 2023 study found a close link between visceral fat and Alzheimer’s disease. So using a rucksack and walking in a weighted way helps to decrease visceral fat and increase bone density, and all of these things make you less insulin resistant.

To maximize longevity, focus on lifestyle, nutrition, physical fitness, sleep, and stress management. But of these, exercise is the most powerful longevity tool. Carrying weight over distances is inherent to, and shaped our species. Rucking is a practical way to add carrying back into our lives. And it's not just trudging uphill that gives you a good workout. When you’re walking down the hills, you’re really strengthening your legs. This is called developing the brakes. When you get older, most people fall because they lose the brakes. What it does is it increases basically the strength and cardio fitness without increasing the joint tension.

I often “prescribe” outdoor exercise to help my patients tap into nature's restorative power. Taking your workout outdoors kicks exercise benefits into overdrive—I’m a strong believer in the power of nature to boost physical and mental health. This is because exercising outside doesn’t just give you the usual health perks of physical activity, but also provides collateral benefits that accompany those workout gains.
Research shows that the fresh air, scenery, and change of environment work wonders for energizing your body and mind—it literally improves your mental health.¹ Getting your sweat on outdoors means scoring an extra vitamin D boost from that glorious sunshine.
